Renato Olivastri

Restoration with Fidelity

Renato Olivastri began his career at the tender age of fourteen working as an apprentice to a custom furniture maker in his native town of Bergamo. He continued his education at Istituto per l’Arte e il Restauro “Palazzo Spinelli” in Florence. He established his bottega, Olivastri Restauri Firenze, in 1988 and specializes in the restoration of Boulle furniture (inlay with tortoiseshell, brass and pewter). In 2016 Renato received the title of Master Craftsman from the Florence Chamber of Commerce, a mark of distinction among artisans.

His workshop on Via dei Velluti (21/R) is the space of a true maestro, with a constant stream of projects in various stages of work. Ornate, centuries-old furniture sits alongside walls of tools for myriad functions and intricate marquetry depicting Florentine landmarks or geometric designs. Renato meticulously restores pieces for museums and collectors, which often involves collaborations with specialists in gilding and wood sculpture. Private commissions are a mainstay of his work, and students from around the world travel to Florence to learn Renato’s restoration and marquetry techniques.

Carrying forward the traditions of his craft, with passion and precision, Renato is the embodiment of a gifted Florentine artisan.
